Vineyard began their Cup campaign with a tricky local derby against SMB Lions from the first division. Building on the strengths of the team, Vineyard went with a 4-1-4-1 to get more possession of the ball and an open first 20 minutes provided a few chances for both teams. Vic Hester sustained a nasty looking cut when going up for a header in typical fearless fashion. He was fine to carry on though.
The deadlock was broken by some fine attacking play by the opposition. Shortly afterwards, Vineyard had the ball in the net, but it was controversially ruled out for a push. Before half-time, Lions made their experience count with two more goals, leaving Vineyard with an uphill struggle.
The second half kicked off like the first, with both sides creating chances. Vineyard’s pacy wingers were causing Lions problems, and Citro was unlucky to see his shot hit the post.
In the last 20 minutes both sides made substitutions, and Vineyard’s lack of match fitness showed. 4 more goals went in as Lions’ pace off the bench proved too hot to handle.
There were plenty of positives for Vineyard though and the scoreline flattered the Lions. Vineyard’s football was solid and they will be hoping to improve and find the killer goalscoring touch ahead of the return to league action in November.
