“Money is the Kindergarten of Discipleship.” Bill Johnson

Some thoughts on tithing:
- “Giving” is a superior way to tithing. It is also harder. (Acts 2:44-45)
- Jesus’ approach to The Law (i.e. “fulfilment”) is not one of eradication but new possibilities thru a new capacity because of a new Source (i.e. The Kingdom). See Ezekiel 11:17-20, 36:24-28
- A correct understanding of the Law undergirds this teaching. I.e., the difference between the cultic, ceremonial & moral aspects of The Law. Jesus wants to make possible the latter. The former fade.
- Tithing is a practical and developmental approach to a surrendered and liberated lifestyle around money.
- Not because we are bound but because the new possibilities of Grace should exceed the minimal obligations of life under Law. (Mt. 5:20)
- Retaining the lower, Old Covenant, standard of the tithe helps us see ourselves clearly. Are we bound by the other “Master?” Or are we living in a New Covenant kind of freedom? (Luke 16:10-13, Gal 3:19-25)
- The Local Church is the Hope of the World. It should be the first focus of financial giving. (Malachi 3:10 & Ephesians 3:10)
- We will not impose percentages to that focus.
- We will be wary of re-directed focus revealing waning trust.
- But the local church budget should reflect the values in all of the tithes. This means a balancing of provision for staff, a generosity towards the disenfranchised & poor and finally a lifestyle of celebration (parties/feasts) and worship unto the Lord.
